After the heartbreaking season three finale of Downton Abbey, fans hoping for some happiness for the Crawley’s may be in luck. Here are the first images of season four for your viewing pleasure.

Seeing Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and her brother-in-law, Tom Branson (Allen Leech), each holding their young children is an excellent sign for some joy in season four. Both lost their partners last season – Lady Mary, when Matthew was suddenly killed in a car accident and Tom, when Sybil died shortly after childbirth. The shock of both deaths seems to still weigh on Mary and Tom but they have their beautiful kids, George and Sybil, respectively, to care for.

Then there is an adorable daddy and daughter image with Tom and toddler Sybil together. Tom’s loneliness will not last long as actress Daisy Lewis has been cast as his love interest and Sybil’s governess.

The head butler of Downton, Mr. Carson (Jim Carter), looks to be in fine form once more. He will have his hands full in helping to manage the staff while possibly acting as an additional comfort to Lady Mary, for whom he has always had a soft spot. Fans, such as myself, have also been hoping for a romance between him and Mrs. Hughes, the head housekeeper. However, there has been no word from creator Julian Fellows on this development.

Lady Rose McClare (Lily James), who caused an uproar by running off with a married man and was generally a thorn in the Crawley family’s (and fans’) side, will return too. She will be up to her usual mischief, apparently having been unaffected by the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) sending her to Scotland with her aunt as consequence for her dalliances.

Kitchen maid Daisy Mason (Sophie McShera) is shown at the stove in the Downton kitchen. If this picture is to be believed, Daisy did not taken her father-in-law’s offer at the end of season three to move in with him and become the heir to his farm but perhaps she is still considering it.
Recently nominated for 12 Emmy’s, including Best Drama Series, Downton Abbey is expected to return to ITV in September.
